Forty years ago, in 1977, the Mariners brought major league baseball to the Pacific Northwest. They lost games in the early years, but they also won hearts, and by now that four-decade history includes a parade of spectacular superstars and unforgettable moments: all-time greats Ken Griffey Jr., Randy Johnson, Edgar Martinez, Alex Rodriguez and Ichiro Suzuki, along with beloved Mariners like Jay “Bone” Buhner and Sweet Lou Piniella and current stars King Felix Hernandez and Robinson Cano. All of these and more are celebrated with a run of unmatched photography and wonderful stories, some from SI‘s most renowned writers, such as Frank Deford, Tom Verducci and Rick Reilly.
These pages will stir memories and delight all Mariners fans. Celebrate.
