A Quick, Easy-to-Read Mystery. Very Few Swear Words, No F-bombs. As Film Would Rate PG, Not a Really a James Patterson Story, July 19, 2016

    Quick Overview

I pre-ordered this because it was billed as a James Patterson work. Then, reading the description afterwords, learned it was, apparently, written by a man who often teams with James Patterson. Since it was free, I decided to get it anyway.

If it is compared to your typical Patterson work, this was a letdown. As a stand-alone by an author other than Patterson, though, it is good. Not great, but good. Let me explain a bit…

    Length: Print, 136 pages.

Q – Target Audience/Genre and is it marketed as Nonfiction or Fiction:
A – Fiction, Mystery and Crime.

Q – How was this book obtained?
    A – Pre-ordered at Amazon.

    Q – If this is fiction, is it a plot-driven or a character-driven story?
A – This is plot-driven, with little time devoted to character development. Even sometimes, there is too little time devoted even to setting the scene.

Q – Is this a book that I can read without having to read others first?
    A – Yes.

Q – If this is a recurring character or a series, does it have a cliffhanger ending?
A – No cliffhanger ending. I don’t expect this to be followed up with a sequel, but there is sufficient room for one.

Q – Are there a lot of typos/misspellings, grammatical errors or other editing failures?
A – No, the editing is good.

Q – Is this a fast, easy read or is it more of a leisure read?
A – This is a fast, easy read. If read only during 30-minute commutes to and from work, plus lunch breaks, two days should suffice for many readers, and three for most.

Q – What sort of language does this writer use to amplify the points made?
    A – No f-bombs and only a couple of sh#ts.

Q – What age group is this suitable for?
A – If it were a movie it would be rated PG for language.

Q – My biggest pleasure or disappointment?
A – If a more typical writing style were used, this might be a 100-page book. What I mean is, as will be seen in the excerpt, an awful large portion of the book consists of one line paragraphs.

I don’t want that to sound too harsh, though, because I am confident the writer did it to ensure a fast read, and not as a ploy to run up the page count. Speaking for myself, I prefer a bit more description – not so much that the writer dictates every little thing that I see in my mind’s eye, but enough that my mind is encouraged to form an image.

To give a feel for the editing, and the style and flow of this work, I am posting a brief excerpt below.

    Excerpt

She reaches up, squeezes his hand. “All right, professor, but if we get to day three and I’m still cut off from Google, you’re going to be cut off from something more intimate. Got it?”

He kisses her once more. “Got it.”

Lance takes a short walk down the near hallway and sees that Sandy is reading a thick textbook he lent her yesterday. Then he pokes his head into Sam’s room. He’s bent over a slowly developing dinosaur model.

Lance goes back into the hallway and nearly bumps into Jason.

    “Professor,” he says.

“Jason,” he replies, remembering with a sour feeling a talk he’d had with Teresa last night. “Look… can we talk somewhere?”

    Jason says, “Sure. Where?”

Good question. The only rooms not being used at the moment were the tiny bathroom, the small living room, and the master bedroom. “Come with me, will you?”

Lance walks into the master bedroom and Jason follows him. Lance says, “I want to help.”

Jason pauses for a second and says, “You can help me by staying together with your family, under my watch, until Langley’s ready to move you. That will be very helpful.”

“You don’t understand,” Lance says. “I’m the head of the household. I’m responsible for them, I’m responsible for them being in trouble and for being here, undercover. I want to help defend them if… if things happen.”

Jason’s face is impassive. “You ever serve? You ever been a cop? You an NRA member?”

“No to all three, but that doesn’t mean I can’t—”

And Lance can’t believe how quickly Jason moves, because in a second or two, a black pistol has been pulled from somewhere in his clothing and is now in his right hand.

Time stands still. The pistol is pointing right at Lance’s chest.

    And without warning, Jason…

The plot was original and it was a good quick read for a “book shot” which I’m guessing is the new term for short book. Idk. The writing was entertaining although minimally detailed, which I sometimes prefer over books that tell me the 10 colors of a single tree leaf in 5 paragraphs. The ending didn’t come as I expected since the authors subtly suggested scenarios for what each person in the family might be being protected for. I imagine when they got to writing the end of the book, the authors high-fived and shouted delightfully “Surprise ending!” However I was left disappointed with how little detail was put into explaining why I spent a couple of hours reading this book. ‘Bookshot’ – I get it, I think. Just enough to read without feeling bogged down. I would have just preferred to see a short chapter around the work they did with the protected witness, rather than a half dozen random sentences that gave the answer reading this book sought. It felt like a date night, when your boyfriend gets drunk and goes to sleep and you sit up thinking, “I shaved my legs for this?”

This is a great James Patterson book that can be read in just 2-3 hours. A family’s life is in danger and they wonder what their body guard is hiding. The excitement and danger prevent any lull in this book. Each member of the family has a different reason for the family to be living in a safehouse. Their nosy neighbor misreads the family’s intentions and puts them into more danger. I couldn’t put the book down and didn’t want it to end.

I would love to read more short books like this by James Patterson.

John Grisham brings new technology to fight against cancer in this, a focused ultra sound method of destroying the tumor without destruction of the body. While this is fiction, the ability to accomplish this is real. As one who has lost loved ones to cancer, I am fascinated by new methods of fighting this disease.

Personally, I’m thankful John Grisham used his name recognition to educate me, an average Jane Doe, about focused ultrasound treatment and the positive impact it potentially has on quality of life. I’m also grateful that I am now in a position (as a result of reading this book) to talk somewhat intelligently about this new technology, along with its necessity and urgency. This is a prime example of how knowledge translates to power. Thank you, Mr. Grisham, for advocating for something that can literally change the futures of so many of us and our loved ones. This is one cause that deserves our attention and financial support.

This author has no reason to mislead. He is intelligent and informed. He isn’t even profiting by publishing. He wants to encourage treatments that add years to lives and increase quality of life. I wish this were available years ago! I wish it were available now!
